emotional reflective tense slow-paced

I loved how the author kept the individuality of the characters and kept a realistic view of what could happen. She touched on different themes that black women in white spaces could come across and I thought it was tastefully done.

Now to my personal feelings, I thought Kemi was a mess and I was getting irritated with her. Brittany came at a close second. The logical side of me knows that it’s just human mistakes, but still. Ugh lol. I’m looking forward to the second book.

This book read like a first draft in a lot of ways. The writing over-explained everything, it was a lot of telling rather than showing and she could’ve said more with a lot less. I was not convinced by the character development and as such I did not connect with the characters nor did I care much about their respective fates. I think the idea behind this book and the perspectives of the characters were really interesting but it needed to be refined and developed more thoroughly.

i don’t know if i’m accurately able to put into words just how much space, complexity and grace is given to the three Black women in this book that make it what it is. there’s so much depth of feeling here, i really enjoyed reading this book.
