This series does such a good job differentiating the characters through their narration. Cassie spends much more time discussing her friends, what makes them happy, and what makes them afraid: it's clear she cares about people and she notices more about them than most do. And she has a strong moral compass that even challenges the reader as she challenges herself. Is it OK to morph an intelligent creature? Well...it's a good question, actually.
Cassie and Jake's flirtationship is a lot more explicit than what's developing between Tobias and Rachel. They pretty much both like each other at this point and even act like a couple at some points. But I still dig it. And ultimately I still really love Cassie and relate to her the most, which is probably why she was my favorite the first time I read these books. Environmentalism, compassion, an avoidance of conflict, and a sometimes crippling sense of moral obligation....that's just basically me.
Of course, this book gets extra points for the WHALES! I have this sneaking suspicion that some readers object to the mystical whale theme as un-sciency or something, but it was the best and most beautiful part of the series so far.

I had forgotten that they added the sixth Animorph this early in the series. Also, it's only four books in and I'm already getting sick of Marco's whiny bullshit. Hopefully having Ax to share in the comic relief will change that up a bit.
