I’m a sucker for a dystopian, fuck corrupt government, the bad guys might be the good guys story and this one is no exception. Toss in some spice, some romance, some high fantasy and fucking dragons? I’m hooked. Holy moly.

Golly. this was better than I hoped. And I had high hopes. I could see most of the twists except one. The disability representation. And the normalisation of different genders and sexualities. And using character dialogue deftly to snap back at gender tropes. All so so good 

I initally gave it 4.75* despite being  sorely tempted to give a rare 5* and then revised back to 4.75.  there were enough editing choices and typos to annoy me.  it pulls me out of this world.  And I was annoyed the pulling came also with the use of modern terms like mutually assured destruction, primary school, and the western months of the year. In a Sanderson universe we have more attention to details like that. 

 There are some flaws in the writing and plot that I’d want to change/edit which is why it would usually mean maximum rating of 4.75*. While it doesn’t meet my fierce criteria for perfect five stars,  I loved this and planned to reread it more than once and annotate it and discuss with others. so I figure those flaws aren’t material.

If you are a fan of action fantasy with romance and dragons, this book is 100% for you. Very well paced, great diverse representation, and a complex range of emotions. Definitely worth the read.
