This book was a little dark - introducing characters who seem like they're going to be important secondary characters, only to kill them off pages later! (I'm still reeling from that!) Not to mention, it's a school where the students are allowed to murder each other!
This book was also unexpected. What I THOUGHT was going to be the huge plot point with Violet and the dragons was so off base! And the ending - ahhh! I kinda had an inkling of part of the ending, but absolutely not the whole thing. It was unexpected in the best way.
This is definitely not a PG-rated book, a hard R at a minimum between the murder, sex, and crude language. I typically veer toward "cleaner" fiction, but this book was awesome. Just be aware!

i feel like all the criticisms have already been said so here's my sparknotes:
- violet is so op 😭😭 first time i wished for a chosen one bc why is she getting all this power
- least safe school since hogwarts, i though u wanted dragon riders??
- ik i just argued the opposite for "powerless" but sorry victoria aveyard called she wants her mc back
nevertheless, even as i thought i was gonna be able to be pretentious and hate this, i loved it!
violet is such a good mc and as someone who's also chronically ill, i loved that she was, too! she's such a sweetheart (at least at first 🤭) and i could really feel for her!
xaden...the man u are. shadow daddy. morally grey. hot. has daggers. kills people for violet. what more could u want???
the worldbuilding is so obvious but ik yarros was trying to be sly 😭 gotta appreciate the effort and also it made me grin so
the plot isn't revolutionary (pun intended) but honestly i'm mainly here for xaden (so is violet)
didn't predict the ending!! so excited!!!
