3.5 - there's so much buildup to the dark continent I really hope it's going to pay off. I am getting a little confused by some of the people and who they work for but I'll get there.

Ok there are sooo many moving parts here. Also coming from CSM and Dorohedoro I'm used to relatively short volumes so I was not expecting just how much they pack into this volume and how long it was. I love when we get into the geopolitical stuff in HxH but in the first 1/4th I was a bit lost just with all the allegiances and factions being explained. HOWEVER once I started to get a handle on that aspect and once everything came together this was BRILLIANT. This volume has like Game of Thrones level political intrigue and its sooo fun keeping track of the schemes and allegiances. I'm actually rly liking Kurapika in this one and its nice to have some of our favorite characters like Bisky and Melody return. In the second half especially this was the perfect set up volume. Now that I know where the cards lie (on the surface atleast) I'm so excited for the succession stuff. The relationships and family politics of the royal family are so interesting to me and I love that Kurapika got assigned to protect the lil baby (i was so worried about her when she was first introduced). Anyway I can't wait for this arc to actually get underway!

If I’m completely honest that was all set to be a 2 star rating up until the last two chapters. I’m not hugely into the dark continent arc and it’s hard to stay invested without my favourite characters but I’m really looking forward to the next volume, from what I know of it.

First full volume of manga I've read, and it was easier to get into than I expected. The novelty of the medium to me combined with Togashi's love for setting up complex situations with many different variables did make it occasionally, slightly, hard to follow, but he really is the king of exposition, and it really is impressive and exciting how much he sets up here. Mainly though I was just delighted beyond words to finally see some of these characters again, since I finished the anime quite a while ago (also characters I didn't really expect to see ever again, got me so hyped). Also, I really enjoyed the art, and found the writing very fun to read.
