I have a tradition of reading a banned book during Banned Book Week. This year’s pick was one of the first books burned by the Nazis – All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. Published in 1929, it was a literary sensation and gave voice to the hellish conditions of World War I as experienced by the soldiers on both sides of the trenches. A deceptively simple writing style that gives the perspective of an eighteen-year old makes it a fast read even if it is not an easy one. If you need a reminder of the power of books you only have to read the Author’s Note at the front of the book.

Grim. Definitely some complexity that the movie from last year couldn't quite capture.

It was interesting to read from a German POV. It was a very short book so it was a quick read.

i seriously need to stop reading these war books, none will ever compare to catch 22 and theyre kinda all exactly the same. mostly forgettable

Boring, bored, etc... I guess that's the point of it. But does not make for a good read for me.

Wow!

Every time I read this, it is just as heart-wrenching as the last time I read it.
