Uff I keep being disappointed by books I am excited about :(
I was sooo intrigued by the concept and idea of the book and wanted to love it, since I have definitely imagined „living“ in certain show sets before, but maaan the plot just got worse and worse 😭 This could have been such a fun book but turned into something extremely weird, not in a good way!! There is such an extreme undertone thoughout the whole book of suicidal ideation and by the end of it it‘s just being bluntly idealized. Disgusting!!!
While I did enjoy some parts of „One‘s Company“ (I mean.. I did read it in 1 day), there are A TON of things about the plot that I immensly dislike:
- Bonnie became such an asshole after winning the lottery and for literally no reason!? I hoped the story would have just been her being happy and indulging in her dream and living her reclusive life but she became sooo annoying and rude!
- Why would Krystal AND Bonnie
have such breakdowns 5 whole years after the incident? And basically at the same time? Sure everybody grieves differently, but to lose yourself and everything like that after 5 years of doing okay?? idk about that - Why wouldn‘t Bonnie
just buy the house for Krystal? I mean she literally gave her a family where she never felt unloved (no matter what Krystal claimed or said)!! - Why was Bonnie
the only one not killed during the robbery? Especially since she was the first one the robbers saw and after what they did to her.. doesn‘t make much sense. - Why would Ray randomly gift Bonnie
a whole ass dog and bird to take care of, without telling her first??? Come oooon LMAO (I did feel bad because Bonnie just wanted solitude hahah) - The way the dog and bird storylines unfolded were both just so cruel and unnecessary. She could have literally brought them to a shelter??!
- Bonnie is in her mid thirties going through.. trauma I guess - if you‘ve read the book you know the overall vibe - she is spiralling and mentally ill.. then after pretending to be each of the characters from her fav TV show „Three‘s Company“, all of a sudden after „being“ the male character „Jack“ she feels like she wants to be a man? There were no signs or any backstory of her being uncomfortable as a woman, and while I don‘t know what it is like to figure out you‘re trans, I thought this was done really badly and just used a plot point with weird undertones to make her seem more „insane“..
- Rita??!!!??!!!??!!?? How could Bonnie go from one extreme to the other in a matter of days?
- Why would Bonnie
not call the police after Rita and Krystal didn‘t leave her alone?? - 7 years passed..
did Krystal and Bonnie really need to have such a dramatic reunion?! 🤣 - Basically, Bonnie is mentally ill. The author did an incredibly bad job at portaying that, or maybe even worse, she meant for Bonnie to come across like that: „crazy“.. it was horrible to read. Especially the fact that she
tries to kill herself by burning alive, the interactions with Krystal (maily the stabbing) and final scenes with her + the fact that Rita might not even have been real?.. - Years passed, probably decades, and people (Krystal) only came to help Bonnie when she was truly at her worst and it was „too late“ - that is not what someone who truly cares would do..
The only thing I reallyyy liked was the writing style, it was honestly nice; easy to read, while also having some beautiful quotes! Because of the plot though, this book still deserves the lowest possible star.. This is honestly one of the worst books I have ever read plot wise!!
I would definitely try another book by Ashley Hutson, mainly because of her writing style, if she‘ll publish more in the future.

Damn, much like Bonnie’s manufactured life, this was such a wholly unique experience for me. I really enjoyed diving deep into her unhinged and hallucinatory world in all its destructive splendor, and I bet you will too.

I’ve never seen Three is company so I probably would get more enjoyment from this book if I got any of the references.
