I can't do it, I cannot finish this with so much incest feelings going around. I have a feeling that somehow, some way, they are going to end up not being brother and sister. But at the moment they think they are, and that's what matters. I cannot support or cheer or route for the characters when it's INCEST!

I don’t even know how to review this book at this point. My feelings are overwhelmingly anger and frustration pointed at the disgusting (incest ) plot contrivance the author felt compelled to include. It’s so disturbing how it’s handled, particularly in this book, and I can’t look past it. The writing got slightly better compared to the first book. The plot is fast-paced and somewhat compelling, certainly enough to keep me turning pages. But the relationship between the two main characters and how they handle it is just…so messed up. If the author published this more recently I honestly think she would’ve been “canceled” into oblivion. It amazes me how popular and beloved this series is (but then again, it all turns out just fine later on, doesn’t it? Which makes this part all the more difficult to stomach, with how pointless I know it is.) On top of all that BS, I had to read about Clary kissing Simon and then saying she essentially sees him like a brother and feels nothing romantically for him, but just goes along with it anyway ??? This book is a hot mess and I’m so glad I managed to finish it quickly so I can move on from this asap lol. I wrote several times in my annotations that “Cassandra Clare is so wrong for that”, and that pretty much sums up my feelings regarding this whole novel.
Okay. It took me forever to finish this book, and I really didn't care for it all that much.
I felt like the pacing was a little rushed in a few places, and because of that it was a bit hard to follow. I also feel like Cassandra made a few assumptions in this one that the reader would simply know what she was trying to convey, and so some things weren't really explained well. Overall, the story arcs here were not my favorite, so it made it hard to push through.
I will say, though, that there were definitely nuggets of brilliance in this. Maryse, for example. I can see that Cass is already developing her character and I'm HERE for it. Alec is definitely becoming more brave and confident, and I really appreciate that it's being done at a realistic pace. SO many author will develop a character too quickly, and it makes them lose credibility. Alec is taking baby steps toward becoming who he knows he is, and I think that's beautiful. MAGNUS FREAKING BANE is salty and sarcastic throughout. His one liners were perfect. He's perfect.
Would I grab for this one again for a bit of light reading? No, probably not. Would I open it up for inspiration for something else? Eh. Maybe some parts. It's necessary for the overall story line and it played it's part.
