Why do i keep picking up books that make me suffer

This is a book by Kyung-sook Shin. Basically about a mother who disappeared at the Seoul station while visiting her children in the city. and when she disappeared then everyone was aware of her presence, all memories with her, and how they finally realized that all this time they didn't really know their mother clearly, they only knew her as the mother who did everything. For me, this book is beautiful, heartwarming, sad, and grief.

After reading this book, i felt quite alone and idk actually what kind of feeling i felt. But i just felt empty. I know this book from twitter, i guess? and i've saw it few times in my local bookstore but i don't have any thoughts to buy it. So i searched for the plot and i did read some review here. And yeah, i ended up buy it a few months ago.

Back to the review and my thoughts about this book. As i said before, it's a really beautiful book, not only because the cover but also because of the story in it. Actually, i'm having some difficulties to understand who's pov or who did the narrative in each chapters, because they didn't mention any of it, but the more i read each chapters i can finally understand who's pov or who did the narrative. I love how they made my curiosity went wild, i could say haha.

I also love how they did a lot of flashbacks in each chapters from her kids and her husband. I'd say this is a heartwarming because of the flashbacks, the time when they're all still together, spending time as a family, and when the mother disappeared they just realized how important the role of mother in their life, how they didn't know their mother well, all her feelings, her hopes, and her dreams. They didn't know everything about their mother.

I don't if this one is counted as a spoiler but, all this time they only see their mother as a mother. Mother who did everything by her own. Who cooks, do the cleaning, taking care of them from when they were children to adults, taking care of them going to school, also managing everything at home by her own. And again, when they realized, it's too late because mother's gone and now they were left with regrets.

I made this quote inspired by this books "They regret it when it all happened and wish "If only at that time..."

When i said it's a quite sad book for me, its' because of the flashbacks, when the mother is still there, when all her feelings, her hopes and her dreams disappeared. I don't know how to deliver the sad feelings but it's just sad.

When i finally read from her husband's pov, i also made this quote "Someone you used to ignore, but when she is now gone, then you realized her presence is meaningful, that someone, your wife."
I don't want to talk a lot about each chapters because i'll spoil everything out so i suggest you guys to read it yourself!

As a conclusion, this book is worth your time, worth to read, worth everything. As i said above, after finished this book i felt empty, and somehow i feel sorry for my mother for suffering a lot because of me. Anyway, highly recommendation for you all who search for family, Asian literature, heartwarming but also sad book.

I think that's all from me. Thank you. And enjoy the book!

FYI, I read the Indonesian version.
