I remember being a cocky 20-something and being all dismissive of book rereads.

Well 10+ years later I’ve decided to reread all my favorites from that time period, and I’m glad for it.

Reading Mistborn is a special experience 10 years later as we readers have learned so much about Cosmere during this time and thus one can appreciate all the nuanced planning that went to Sanderson’s first books.

The Final Empire has so much unique world building and it’s amazing how much he can build sense of doom. This was my favorite book from Era 1 back then because I loved to found family and heist elements of the story. Now I can seen how the YA push didn’t truly work and felt the weakest, even tho the relationship ends up being very precious down the line.

Another indication that this is a book of a novice writer is the “oppressed people learn secrets of all the things” trope. Like we have Kelsier knowing way too much for a ska slave in Uber oppressive dystopia, but ehh. It all works out in the end.

Either way, it’s very fun to read favorite author’s work and still finding it as good as you remember.

The first 3/4 of this book get 2 stars for being painfully slow and repetitive. It took me six months to read this and I considered giving up on it many times. But the last 1/4 of the book, the story really picked up and that last part gets 5 stars. I can't dismiss how bored I was reading the majority of the book so overall I rate it 3.5 stars.
