Entertaining read and such beautiful book design - the words printed in dark red ink and thorns twining above the chapter headings really added to the atmosphere of the novel.

This book is FULL of racist slurs, particularly g****, and horrifically in the context of a “blood curse”. Disgusting and harmful to the Romani community.

I’ve only finished 200 pages, at best. i’d honestly prefer it if thorn (thorn? thorn? of all names?) was the protagonist because reading through rune’s chapters was... not it.

i really liked this book! i loved the gothic setting and the relationship between the two main characters, as well as the phantom of the opera aspect. i tried reading phantom of the opera in the past, but i think my book had a difficult translation, so i couldn’t really understand anything LOL. unlike that book, this dumbed the story down enough to actually enjoy it!! i really like ag howard’s books, so i’m happy <3

I wanted to give this a book a chance, but its putting me in a reading slump and refuse to let myself fall into a slump in the middle of self-isolation. No sir
I think if I'd read this in high school, I would've loved it. It has that dark, emo, "you're-my-soulmate-and-I-can't-live-without-you" vibe that I ate up like candy as a teenager. Honestly, I think that's my major issue with this book is that its a bit outdated. It has a lot of tropes in it that were the height of fashionable in YA back in the mid-2000s during the Twilight, paranormal romance craze. We have a heroine whose beautiful (but doesn't know it) with a crazy, super amazing talent that all her classmates love and hate her for. The main love interest is hot and a loner and he and the main character are DESTINED TO BE TOGETHER. FOREVER. Because the main character is so PURE. And GOOD. And BEAUTIFUL. (Gonna be honest, I didn't make it that far into the book, so I saw very very little of the romance, but these were the vibes I was getting, so I'm going to roll with it)
For me personally, these tropes are tired and archaic. I loved them in high school, but definitely not anymore. The tropes of the Twilight era are dead and they need to stay dead. The best thing about picking up this book, is that it made me slightly interested in reading the original Phantom of the Opera. I've seen the musical and thought it was okay at the time, but now I think I'll love it because I'm sure it will be 1000x better than this

I loved the phantom of the opera long before I read this book. But my lord I love it even more now. Rune had a really hard tragic strange life but once you find out why all these events happened to her you want to find out what she's going to decide to do with her gift. And Thorne god was he just loveable. His beginning was also hoirrible but to find out about his past and see his he has turned out just makes you want to hold him and live him and never let him go. Thorns is Runes maestro just as Erik was Christine's. But you find out that not only is Thorne Runes maestro but her "flame jumelle"ahh and how they become twin flames your heart breaks and dies and you want their lives to go smoothly forever. thats not how these stories work that would be borning. Nope they almost lose each other because Erik wants to do something unspeakable. God this book was so not what I expected but in the best possible way.
3 out of 5 stars.
After 5 years of wanting to read this book, I finally did it! I know if I read this then I would have loved it.
I love how A.G. Howard picks a classic literature/fairytale and retells it in an entire new and unexpected way. I'd actually love and definitely read if she writes more re-imagined version of books.

I wanted to like it. By the end, I was disappointed and annoyed. It was a great beginning that faded into meh.
I kinda liked the idea ngl but, once Erik stepped in as a character, I couldn’t give any damn about the main lovers. He’s just very special to me and I love him so very dearly, each time I read the last chapter of The Phantom of the Opera, I break up crying. As long as he’s doing good, I’m good. But also, let my boy rest in peace damn it.
