This book made me never want to go in the ocean for fear of seeing fish dicks

This book was reccomened as a weird girl book & it did not disappoint!

This story follows Lucy. After a bad breakup, she finds herself in a group filled with others struggling with the addiction of love and lust. Lucy tumbles head first in an obsession with a swimmer she meets on the ocean. This book shows how much one can abandon for love.

Going into this book I was expecting weirdness. I had heard that this book was weird, but I was looking forward to it because I love weird books. I also read Milk Fed by Melissa Broder and loved it because of its weirdness. I think this book was too weird even for me. After writing this, weird no longer even seems like a word...

Anyways. I think that Melissa Broder has a very unique writing style and weirdness is definitely her schtick. She does it very well. Milk Fed was amazing and genius. And while I really liked The Pisces almost as much as Milk Fed, there were certain elements that ultimately stood in the way of me giving it a higher rating.

Up until Lucy meets Theo it is an excellent book. But then she starts having sex on the shoreline with a merman and it just gets weird.

All of the descriptions of Theo's body and how they would have sex would give me the ick. I started having to skip over those parts because it grossed me out so much that I was having full-body reactions to them.

Aside from Theo, I think The Pisces is a great book. If it had just been a book about a woman learning about love and how to be a responsible person, it would have been a new favorite for me. If it had been a book sans-Theo, it would have been a new favorite for me. Unfortunately, it wasn't and the weird fish man ruined the overall experience.

Here's a tip for authors: please don't subject readers to very graphic depictions of a woman having sex with a fish.
