This was a fun read. Especially while playing ME2!

The book has some intense moments and solid characters. However, it feels like it didn't need to be nearly as long. Much of it feels like meandering around the plot or extending moments far past their due attention. Overall, it had the making of a good story with far too much fluff to be worth ever reading again

As a continuation of sorts from the previous entry the main character Khalee further expands her character development whilst intertwining within the wider mass effect universe. The cast is diverse and the focus on one characters disability and how they live with it was wonderful to see. In particular the addition of some of the Quarians to this story was my favourite aspect of the story, learning more about their culture and seeing them in action.

Unlike the previous book (Mass Effect - Revelation), it took a long time to be (loosely) hooked by this one, with such a poor plot. If in the previous book you didn't have to know the Mass Effect lore, this one unfortunately requires that the reader must know about what happened in the first game, showing an adventure that just touches some major events of the ME storyline. Sometimes it seems it was hastly written, showing that the pace and rhythm was not the same all the time. I was disappointed because I felt that sometimes the reader is required to complete the gaps by himself, or worse, forced to believe in very implausible hooks.

Such as "Revelation", "Ascension" is loosely characterized as a sci fi book, without exploring - once again - all the possibilities of this huge scenario. It's just a detective/thriller story with spaceships and aliens, that's all.

This is another straightforward science fiction adventure that happens to be set in the "Mass Effect" universe. The story's fun, but there's nothing about this novel that stretches the mind.

That sounds like faint praise, but it's hard to write a straightforward science fiction adventure. I enjoyed this novel and immediately started in on the next one. If you're a fan of the "Mass Effect" franchise, you will probably will, too.
