Sweet, funny, relatable, and while a little dramatic at times, what good love story isn't? The characters are delightfully nuanced. Of course, there'd be little story if the protagonists would just have an adult conversation or two, but their lapse is forgivable.

This book was fine, but I don't get the hype it got.

I didn't want to put this book down. I approached it wary, I saw a few negative reviews, but I'm so glad I picked it up.
It's the story of January over-coming grief and learning to negotiate life and what she believes in after feeling it crumble around her. I liked January, she was struggling but quite determined and self aware enough to be able to reflect on events and recognize her own fault in them. I loved her best friend Shadi, even though she wasn't overly present in the novel because of the way January describes her. She is so charming and "drowning in life...in a good way". Their friendship is beautiful.

Now, to talk about Gus. Augustus and January at a different moment could be considered a sunshine/grump pairing except this novel finds them both reconnecting during a personal low. Gus is intricate and damaged and just SO lovely and sweet. They have incredible, fun banter. He is so quietly romantic and reminded me of my partner in that way. Infuriating because they refuse to tell you what they want you to do because they want you to do what you want to - making your happiness their priority.

I teared up a little at the end and I don't remember the last time a romance did that for me.

Very happy I read this, a wonderful summer read.
