I’m not typically one for contemporary romance, but many people had suggested to me to read Emily Henry, as her character writing was typically well done. After finishing this book, I found myself really enjoying it.

I think both January and Gus seem like very interesting protagonists, and their development together was very engaging and emotional. Often romance books banter makes me cringe, but I really liked their dynamic, it felt very Luke and Lorelai (any GG fans reading this?). Additionally, I liked the side characters, and would have liked to see more of Shadi and even Naomi (for the drama I guess!)

I also loved January’s struggle with the reality of her parents’ relationship. You don’t necessarily have to agree with what happens, and I liked that Sonya and January didn’t have a big reunion or even forgiveness. It felt very realistic to me.

Emily Henry is a very self aware writer, and although the book has a couple of those cliches, the story didn’t suffer in my opinion. I felt anxiety and trauma dealt with fairly well.

This is my first Emily Henry book, and I would totally be open to reading more!

(reread)

This book is just incredible. Even though this was a reread for me, I fell in love with the characters all over again.

Emily Henry has such a talent for writing deep romance that explores all of the human emotions that stay under the surface; the hard, dark, and difficult things that make real relationships so complicatedly beautiful.

January Andrews will forever be one of my favorite characters (and I’m so glad I read the Layover epilogue this time around!)

I really enjoy EH’s writing. It’s not the typical all sweet rom-com at all. This one is a bit dark and twisty. I read it in one sitting. I enjoyed it and would have given it 3* , but I stumbled upon a 1* review and when I read it I was like “oh yeah… all those critiques are true.”

There was a lot of repetition about Gus’s eyes, his messy crumpled clothes etc. I wonder if she did a bunch of the descriptions to just add bulk to the book.

Polecajka ode mnie <3

I had to read this book in sections as an assignment for my class, and I can't emphasize how difficult that was when I always wanted to read more. I loved January and Gus, and I'm always a sucker for the
"love interest has been hopelessly in love with main character for years while said main character actively dislikes them" trope.
One thing I found incredibly frustrating was
Gus' marriage. I don't necessarily hate that he was married, as he was technically separated, but the way that he confesses to January that he thought about going back to his wife while he was telling January that he actually chose her?? Why was he messing with my girl's emotions like that.
Overall, I was a huge fan, and I felt like this was one of the few books I've read that didn't feel rushed in the end, and everything I wanted to know more about was wrapped up.
(Although, I have to admit that I was kind of hoping for a little January and Naomi confrontation, but I can live without it.)
I really can't recommend this book enough. It's such a relaxing read that always seems to be moving forward but still doesn't move too fast.
