Pat Mills' rapid fire account of the difficult beginnings and fractious life of 2000AD is scurrilous, self-aggrandizing, and entertaining as all get out. While it's not hard to imagine that some of the people mentioned within would disagree vehemently with his version (as he readily acknowledges), one can't really begrudge him his self-regard given his almost miraculous track record as creator/writer/midwife of so many of the english speaking world's most iconic and enduring comic book characters. As Pat tells it, 2000AD's remit was always to champion the underdog, to be subversive, to change the game, and his book is very much in the same vein, with issues of creator's rights and their exploitation at the hands of the UK comics establishment firmly front and centre; he clearly hopes that this book will go at least some way to changing that unedifying status quo. And therefore, may it succeed as 2000AD did so spectacularly all those years ago.
