haunting. you kind of know what happens since it's a prequel and Haymitch is obviously the winner, but the backstory is interesting. first half was slower (and more lighthearted). added to the world-building and nods to first book as well

Suzanne Collins really knows how do it. It is almost a Greek tragedy, in the sense that we know exactly what is going to happen, but can do nothing to change it. It was really great to see Haymitch's development as a character and not always for the better. The brutality of the Capital is also exemplified over and over and over again, through
the double reaping, 'reaping' Haymitch, 'reaping' Ampert, the mutts programed for each tribute. Also great to see the beginnings of Haymitch's and Effie's relationship. One thing that annoyed me was why they didn't send mutts to kill Haymitch after he started fucking around like they did with Maysilee and Ampert.
At the end of the book, I wanted to pick up the next book which is the best thing a book can do in my opinion.
