I’m gonna start billing Suzanne for therapy.
What a devastating poignant and moving book. I loved going back into Panem and revisiting characters we meet along the way in the trilogy and in Songbirds. She is a mastermind with crafting lore around small tidbits she dropped decades ago at this point.
With every death in this book, my heart just ached. I knew before going into this that it was going to be devastating but it just really drove home the cruelty and control of the Capitol. Finishing Andor recently and then reading this, the overlapping themes of propaganda and fascism are extremely relevant to today’s political landscape.
I had the B&N exclusive version where they interview Suzanne Collins about the book and it was cool to get her insights on the messages she sees for each book. I have so much respect for her as an author and the issues she’s passionate about and infuses them in a seemingly YA series when we all know it’s the adults that need to hear it too.

i finished this book while sitting alone in my room because i knew i needed space to sob my heart out at the epilogue that i knew was going to emotionally ruin me. i cried many times while reading this story but i knew the epilogue would be a special kind of hit.
maybe haymitch’s story wasn’t necessary, but i won’t pretend that i’m not thankful for this insight into his past. i mean, it’s a very difficult read but i’m still thankful for it. this is the only hunger games book i’ve read before watching the film adaptation, and no doubt that made this story hit more for me than the others, but it was still a brilliant book.
although a prequel to the original trilogy, this also feels like a spiritual sequel to the ballad of songbirds and snakes, what with the continued emphasis on the covey and lenore dove who seems to carry many aspects of lucy gray in her, and i loved that. sunrise is a welcome bridge between ballad and katniss’ story, but i’m still very distraught.

I did not like this one as much as the original trilogy; however, I enjoyed it a lot more than the last book with Snow's backstory. Did it really change the Hunger Games for me? No, but it did add some background and context that I didn't hate.
Lenore Dove, CTM I LOVE REVOLUTIONARY GIRLS.
Maysilee, My baby, hubieras amado a Johanna, tu fuego no pudo ser apagado. Te amé tanto que mi corazón no podia soportar tu final.
Haymitch, me duele.
BTW the musica, ampert, mags, wiress.
