Man this had no business getting me as good as it did! I am book-clubbing this w my dad - we also read ballad of songbird and snakes together and when we went to see the movie I rlly thought for some reason there was a post-credits scene and there absolutely was not but I made my family sit through the entire credits anyways...watch this space for this movie when it comes out bc there has to be a post-credits scene for this one shorely

If you see the knife coming for your heart, does it make you bleed less?
Sunrise on the Reaping is an agonizing depiction of Haymitch’s experience with the Hunger Games. It’s raw, devastating, and emotionally powerful, but it doesn’t offer a new lens into the world we already know. It doesn’t shift our understanding of Panem or peel back layers of the Capitol the way The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes did.
Where Ballad was evocative, revelatory, and enriching, Sunrise felt more like a companion piece: endearing, harrowing, and intimate. It doesn’t expand the lore of the games or the political machinery behind them, but it does carve out a more tragic and ironic space for Haymitch. It paints the why behind the man with heartbreaking clarity.
We may have understood him before, but now we ache for him.
It didn’t offer many surprises. It gave us exactly what we expected. We knew that the Capitol wasn’t going to kill Haymitch, but it was achingly apparent that they would retaliate somehow. Yet, watching the consequences play out was brutal and the grief spoke volumes.
I appreciated the cameos, and I thought the epilogue was a satisfying and tender conclusion, giving this multigenerational story a grounded sense of closure.
It may not have changed the world of the Hunger Games, but it did deepen our connection to one of its most complex survivors.
