The relationship between Juliette and Roma does not have much buildup in the book, rather it relies completely on what happened 4 years prior which we only get slight snippets of, but not enough to make me care for the characters.
We are told they're in love but not really shown.
Because of that their relationship falls quite flat.
Juliette's character also relies heavily on the implication that she is ruthless and has a reputation, but I wish the author let her be more violent and unhinged throughout the book. Especially during her fights.

Romeo & Juliet retellings are often derivative, but this was absolutely NOT. So good. Magical, set in 1920s Shanghai… what else could a reader ask for? I had Taylor Swift’s reputation album playing in my head the entire time. I loved all of the characters, many of which are queer, even though they were morally grey, to say the least. Juliette and Roma, the ultimate lovers to enemies to lovers, have my heart. Can’t wait to read the sequel! Beware: violence is SUPER graphic, cannot emphasize this enough. You will be grossed out.

This book has a brilliant world building and imagery. it really feels like you are in Shanghai, from culture to stalls I could feel the city’s booming setting. You could almost smell the food from the food stalls, feel the anger of factory workers, hear the booming voices of foreigners and natives, and almsot see the lgiths of Shanghai as the story progresses. I also loved the political and economic developement in the story, it really felt athentic and well-written. As for the main characters, I really like the way Romeo and Juliet plot has been intervined with the story, yet it was also seperate as well. The story was so much more unique and special with the different plot changes. I loved the multiple points of view of characters that made the story so captivating.  The pacing was well written and interesting. And I loved the multiple langauges(as a person with decent understanding of Russian, anytime Roma said dorogaya I went head over heels :)) included int he story showing the cultural diversity of Shangahai. Overall a great read. The only reason it’s not 0.25 is the monster. I thought it was a nice touch to a add a mythical aspect to original Romeo and Juliet, however, the intricate details of the moster sometimes confused me :(. But that is partly my fault, so the book is magnificent despite the confusing moments!

I struggled immensely with the writing and the pacing. I think I wanted everything to move faster. I didn’t want to continue slogging my way through trying to figure out why Romeo betrayed Juliet and nonsense like that. Was just super hard.

‘They could not collapse now, no matter how badly Juliette wanted to lie down and become still for the next millennia.’

I liked it but not a huge fan of skull bugs, and the writing wasnt my favourite at a few points. I felt like finding out who it was was just going round and round it circles a but too much

A pretty good book! I did wonder how close it would sit to the orginal romeo and juliet story arc. very imaginative and left on a cliffhanger so i’ll have to read the next one!
