An ode to crime writing. Not in the league of the greats mentioned. Reads quickly enough but not that clever a plot really.

Come for the twisty plot, stay for the clever literary mystery references. It’s clear Peter Swanson is a diehard classics mysteries fan, as this story is essentially an ode to the genre. I thought the plot was twisty and clever enough that I was guessing until the end (which was very predictable but not unwelcome). My biggest gripe is the addition of *completely* unnecessary details. We don’t need to hear what everyone had for lunch or what distance you walked down the street. But overall, this was a quick read and a must if you’re a classic literary mystery fan.

This book was extremely pretentious and had the least surprising ending in recent memory. The ebook version also needed a thorough copy edit. I am a fan of some of the author’s earlier works but this was a definite low.

Lots of twists and turns, and fun references to local spots (shoutout to the Somerville Public Library!) and more sadly to various restaurants that have since closed forever. Peter Swanson is always great. I'm intrigued to see this referred here to Malcolm Kershaw #1 since it wasn't exactly left open to have additional stories about him. But if there are, I'm here for them!
