I didn't find anything captivating in this story, it had nothing to do with horror. There were too many unnecessary baseball details. Overall, a waste of time.

This was a great short story. At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it because it mentions the pandemic, and I don't like books with modern references because I am trying to read to forget.  However, the book ended up being really great and I wish it had been longer!

Just a reminder of why Paul Tremblay is one of my favorite authors.

Captivating, confident, imaginative

We hear from an eccentric charter boat operator and his experience as a child one summer in the 1980s, told during an interview with a local reporter.
🇺🇸 Set in the Cape Cod canal region of Massachusetts, USA

🐺🐕 Growls, Howls, and Tail Wags:
🍿 The narration was like how movie narrations work, where our MC is setting the scene and telling the tale in their own voice. It made me feel like I was watching a movie and the pacing was good.

🤔 Jimmy really spins the story and sometimes seems like he's exaggerating, which is effective for creating suspense. Is Jimmy just lonely and trying to keep the reporter, Heidi, interested? Or is he diminishing what happened because it's too hard to explain?  The setting was well chosen too for making it so people can't just run away in any direction.

🤗 I would have liked to spend more time with this story, but it wasn't rushed or too short for me either. I love how the author fit in Jimmy's past and his relationship with his father, the baseball game, the energy at the park, and the horrors to come.

😮‍💨 Everything culminates in an open-ending. It was bittersweet. Hit hard with the fears and feels, but I also wanted to know more about all the characters and how thing turn out.

Mood Reading Match Up:
  • Plot revolving around a baseball game
  • Nature's revenge microbial scientific/evolutionary horror
  • Commentary on climate change, environmental ethics, and effect of man-made imbalances in nature
  • Dusting of friends-to-lovers romance

Content Heads-Up: Drowning. Death of a child. Death of a parent. Toxic masculinity. Poisoning. Natural disaster.

Format: Kindle Unlimited
