The Wanted is a good exemplar of Crais' work and the Cole/Pike series. In this one, though, we see things from the perspectives of at least three different people...Cole and Pike, the hitmen, and the pursued. I'm told that, for a novelist, it's a little difficult to pull off such a complicated thing, but Crais does it well. It is entertaining to get a glimpse of the goings on from each party's relatively limited view of the whole, to stand above the fray, as it were, and begin to weave the whole cloth from the varied strands. And, of course, Elvis and Pike prevail in a satisfying ending.
I am a huge fan of Elvis Cole, but The Wanted fell flat for me. I generally love reading about both Elvis and Joe Pike, but I could barely stomach reading about the two ridiculous bad guys – they were way too over the top for me. I also didn’t feel that Tyson Connor was very believable which made the mystery not very believable as well. I realize that mystery series with numerous books such as this one are bound to have an installment or two that are not my favorite so I am hoping the next one will get back on track. Joe Pike is fabulous, and he kept the book from being a 2-star read for me. I received this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
3.25/5
Tyson is robbing houses with a crew of teenagers and his mother is on to him. She hires a private detective to find out what he's up to. Only, the kids have stolen something somebody wants back and is willing to deploy two killers in search of it. It was an okay read. Entertaining.

Easy and quick to read. Found the first person narrative a bit awkward. Overall writing and characters felt…weird? But it was an okay quick read. There was more emotional depth to the private investigator than often is the case, but still pretty basic. That being said, this is the first book of this series I’ve read, so given that the weirdness makes sense. I believe I would have enjoyed it more if I had some previous understanding of the characters/stories.

Not as much Joe as I'd like but still a good read. These books have gotten darker over the years and this continues the trend but is still not bleak. If you are already invested in this series, this will be good. If you haven't read the previous books, this is not the one to start with.
Lots of fun to read and everything you'd expect from this wonderful series. I admit to wishing for more Joe Pike in the novel, but that's just me. I love Elvis, too, and had a great time inhaling this novel as if I'd been suffocating since the last one came out.
