Wasn’t quite as good as the first book. The love story had less drama to it, the war story seemed more contrived, the magic seemed less mysterious… dunno. Didn’t scratch the itch in the same way.
It wasn’t the worst, it just felt much less impactful.

Oof this was hard to get through. It felt slow and while I appreciate the attempt to world build, I just wasn't invested in the characters or the plot. The last few chapters had the most action and it wraps up okay but this story wasn’t for me.

I liked it, but it was too long and I kept on thinking about the next book I would read.
It was a war story, more than anything. A couple of fantasy elements don't make it fantasy, in my opinion.
I didn't feel the romance and although I did get more about the gods, it wasn't that interesting.
I understood how Dacre was upset by Enva, but I think there should have been more of a love story there. In the first book, we don't know whether she was forced or it was a marriage, and then we find out she went willingly but she always knew he would want to kill her?
It just didn't make sense to me. I would have liked it better if once he saw her, their feelings came back and they realised how much they loved each other.

3.5 stars rounded to 4. This was a good conclusion to the 2 part series, but it wasn't as good as Divine Rivals, in my opinion. A lot more action, and some of it maybe not necessary? And then the end, how Dacre was defeated was a bit anticlimactic. Still, it was a fast paced story and I liked it.

4⭐️ (maybe 3.75?) I read this directly after Divine Rivals and while I still liked it, it didn’t captivate me quite as much. It read a lot slower in my opinion.
I liked the idea of Roman falling back in love with Iris through their letters similar to how she fell in love with him as Carver in the first book. I was kind of sad to see his memories come back suddenly and for that to stop. But I loved the start of him liking her again through her writing!
It felt like the ending was rushed. Killing Dacre felt too easy almost? And then it cutting to her being above ground again made me feel like I skipped a chapter. I wish they had included her walking back to the cafe.
I still liked this, just didn’t looove it. I probably won’t re-read this again if I’m honest!
