This is probably my 3rd or 4th time through, but the first time I actually saw this book as the gem it is. ❤️

I’m pretty sure that my soul lives with the dear creatures in this tales of small riverside life. I related so, so much to Mole. I have heard of this book from great figures and friends for years. I finally borrowed it from the library. (Did you know you can still do that? Gosh, though, it stings to let it go when it’s due!) I haven’t bought a copy yet because Malcolm Guite says that if you own a copy, it has to have original illustrations by E.H. Shepherd and I can’t find one that I like online…
Anyway, this is a marvelous, simple, illustrious, profound, emotional, impactful, silly, ridiculous, childish, imaginative, magical little book. Chapter seven is the most powerful of them all (though I cried through many). I read chapter seven three times and considered memorizing it. I highly recommend reading chapter seven, and then watching a video clip that Malcom Guite does on the book. It is a powerful delight. (Just Search Malcolm Guite and The Wind in the Willows)

Recommendation that finally clinched it: Leif Enger (Episode #6 of the Hutchmoot Podcast)
