Writing: 3.75⭐️/5
The writing was strong throughout the story, but it lacked pacing. This is something I’ll mention again in the plot because it’s kind of a fault on both accounts. I really wish that each plot point had been discussed and pulled out longer because, though the story is great, I wanted more time with each moment. It also became a little hard to stay with the emotions of the character because of its pacing.

Characters: 4.5⭐️/5
The characters felt full and realized. Where the story failed to keep my engagement due to some pacing issues, the characters wholly took up the slack.  Zephyr was an enthralling main character to follow, even more so as she attempted to take on characterizations that went against her own. I thought the only part of characterization that lacked depth was some deeper understanding of exactly why Zephyr maintained such a strong bond with Ren. I would have loved a bit more time with that.

Plot: 3.75⭐️/5
The overall plot is genius, and yet the pacing of it being told fell short of expectations. Some of the parts of the plot felt far too rushed

Reading this immediately after finishing Fire Becomes Her was rough lol the pace is much slower and the writing is much more staccato, sharp, and intense. The characters are more intense too, especially Zephyr. It's also obvious that this is meant to be a series because there was a lot of setting things up for the next book. Including what seems like it'll be an enemies to lovers romance, but all we get is one [manipulative] kiss, and I was okay with that lol. After reading a book with so many queer relationships, especially ace and aro ones, I was hoping for something not hetero but hey lol.

My favorite thing about this book was the shift when Zephyr
dies and realizes she's actually a god and then ends up in Lotus's body
. That really took the story to a whole new level for me and helped keep my interest when the battle stuff was making me nod off a bit.

The thing I like the most about this book is how many freaking female characters there are, especially badass ones! There are honestly very few male characters, and none of them are in positions of power really (except Xin Ten's uncle and well 😂). I love that they're all strong and badasses in different ways. Like Zephyr of literally a god but she's not a physical warrior but super smart and intuitive. Xin Ren is a great leader and compassionate towards her people. Lotus and Cloud are warriors. And the list goes on and on.

Overall, I do think it was good enough that I'll read the next book!

I love this book so much, it is such a powerful fantasy rife with imaginative imagery and subtle symbolism. The female character is strong and uses her wits to her advantage causing a cat and mouse game to occur. Political machinations and history are strong in this book and I loved it so much I bought it! (Read originally as a library book)
The cover is beautiful, but I really love how you get character art in the beginning which helps you to get an idea for what the characters look like. (Quite frankly it is hands down the best character art I have ever seen)

Strike the Zither was my first read by Joan He, and I was pleasantly surprised with how deep the story got. I did not realize that it was a retelling until receiving the arc. Thank you to #Netgalley for that.

This read was fast paced, and full of unexpected twists. I was honestly taken by complete surprise when the big one came through at around the 60% mark. I am more than excited to read the upcoming titles in this new series.

High recommend. Please note the content warnings as this work does deal some with aggressive character deaths.

Many thanks to Text Publishing and Joan He for the advanced copy of Strike the Zither via NetGalley, in return for my honest and unbiased review. Quick note: I don’t recap plots in my reviews, as it’s easy enough to read the book’s synopsis and blurbs, I purely focus on my feelings & opinions of how the books makes me feel.

Strike the Zither is a fascinating re-imagining of the Three Kingdoms. I will admit that I went into this book not knowing anything about the Three Kingdoms at all. But I can imagine it was a very male-heavy affair. Strike the Zither, on the other hand, has been written with a female majority of characters. Male characters, while present, are in the minority. However, rather than making them inferior (as would be the case in a gender-switch reimagining), He also wrote male characters into positions of political and strategic power in the story.

It took me a bit to get the feel of the story and I found it difficult to fully immerse myself in it. The way it is written would make it work very well as a graphic novel or screen adaptation. There is a large switch of viewpoint in the middle of the book, which again threw me, as I’d not long gotten into the rhythm of the story, and this did detract from the story somewhat for me. Overall, I just felt a little something was lacking. It felt a little shallow, the characters lacked in depth and there were sudden leaps in time with little explanation.

Really, I feel Joan He did not do herself justice. She could have split this book into two. The ‘before’ and the ‘after’. With more depth of the characters and explanations, it would have felt like an even richer, deeper story.

It was a brilliant idea, well executed. But, with more time and over two volumes, would have been immense. It could have been MORE. For this reason I just couldn’t love it.

“One star cannot light a galaxy, he’d said as he’d seen on the feather. I’m not a star, I’d countered. I am the universe itself.”

Strike the Zither follows Zephyr, a strategist for one of the three warlordesses in conflict over the land in the realm. Zephyr goes undercover in the enemy camp to tip the scale in her side’s favor. There, she meets challenges in a rival strategist named Crow and otherworldly encounters.

Thank you to NetGalley and Roaring Book Press for an ARC of this book!

I loved this. Zephyr is such an unapologetic character. She’s arrogant, but for good reason. She’s a very good strategist and I loved being inside her brain throughout this book. I got to hear all her plans and ideas. I love political intrigue and war in a book and this one had plenty of that! I loved her and Crow’s relationship and how it developed from a rivalry to something much more. Their connection was very genuine and intellectual. Joan He always done such an amazing job with plot twists. It’s always something you never see coming and could never possibly guess. Her stories are always so unique and different. The story was rooted in history and possibilities and I enjoyed the journey it took me on.

This book is chock-full of some of the most badass female characters you’ve ever met.  A feminist retelling of an ancient Chinese classic, this women-led epic is a wartime story of loyalty, trust, honor, and betrayal—it’s absolutely brutal, at times.  The narrator, Zephyr, is a brilliant young strategist who is always three steps ahead, predicting and orchestrating events with pinpoint accuracy, until something unforeseen changes everything.  Be prepared to get hooked on this series!

Strike the Zither is the story of Zephyr, a young strategist for the lordess Xin Ren. Taken in as an orphan by Xin Ren, Zephyr follows her out of honor and thinks she has all of the pieces set perfectly in line to help Xin Ren gain back what is rightfully hers. But even Zephyr doesn't know all of the pieces in play.

I flew through this book and will probably read it again and again as I await its sequel.

Having all of these women in powerful positions and using the title of "lordess" instead of lady was so much fun and a detail I highly enjoyed. Having a sworn sisterhood made me so excited and immediately added so much to their relationships and to the way that Zephyr was there, as Xin Ren's strategist and right hand, but still an outsider to the ones closest to Xin Ren.

When I read the table of contents and saw it ended on an Intermezzo I was so excited to find out why and the closer I got to the end, the more I wanted to know how it would go. I absolutely loved this book and I am already eagerly awaiting the next in the series. Zephyr is such an interesting character, the way she is willing to do anything to further her cause, and the changes she goes through as she learns more of the truth of who she was and is.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Children's Publishing Group and Roaring Brook Press for making this book available in exchange for an honest review.
