Best bit was Minerva chatting up Hughs mother about him being desperate to be engaged. Otherwise this was so boring with average characters.

DNF @ 32%.

I think I've wandered down the wrong historical romance aisle.

The premise seemed promising and I needed a quick, easy listen to start later in the evening that would be cute, but easy to put down and not stay up too late reading. Well, this one certainly served.

The characters devolved into caricatures, especially our main man Hugh, who spent most of his page time telling tell all what a scoundrel and a wastrel he was when it was so blatantly clear he was actually pathologically certain no one in his visual range should be even the slightest bit uncomfortable that we slid far, far into the cringy opposite. Don't even get me started on the fake Mother or the stupidity of Hugh's scheme. Not for me.

The sisters were interesting, as was their story. I suspect they will find out about their aristocratic lineage soon enough and possibly even find their father, who has dumped them to be welcomed back into the arms of his well funded family. But no way can I suffer through the rest of it to find out myself.

OK I JUST FINISHED AND IM STILL A LITTLE BIT ON THE BOOK END HIGH AND YKW PAST ME WOULD'VE ABSOLUTELY RIPPED THIS BOOK TO SHREDS BUT NOT ME OF RN. NOT ME. THIS WAS PRETTY GOOD. IT WAS ALSO PRETTY BAD. BUT I LIKED IT AND I LIKE WHAT I LIKE AND I LIKED THIS AND THATS THAT. LOVED PARTS OF IT EVEN. MY FAV WAS

“No wonder all the ladies love you.”
“Except you.” That reality hurt.
“Except me.” Deeply hurt.

LIKE FR MISCOMMUNICATION??? I FUCKING EAT THAT SHIT UP DUDE LIKE I LOVED IT. I L O V E D I T. AAAAAAAAAAAA. THIS BOOK DID HAVE A LOT OF ISSUES. A SHITTY START (VERY SHITTY N BORING) BUT A WONDERFULLL MIDDLE AND A PREDICTABLE ENDING. I THINK BY THE END THE WRITER TOO WAS SELF AWARE THAT THE THING HOLDING BACK MALE MC WAS STUPID N SO SHE JUST RESOLVED A BOOK LONG CONFLICT IN HALF A PAGE. STILL. I LIKED IT. VERY CUTE. DEFINITELY HAVE READ BETTER HISTORICAL ROMANCES THAT THIS BUT THIS ONE WAS ALSO GOOD N CUTE N YKW JUST WHAT I NEEDED RN

this is the perfect quick read if you’re looking for an easy and enjoyable regency romance, with classic tropes and a predictable but charming storyline. i marked this down in my tbr to give myself a break from some more challenging reads.

i was enjoying this SO much for the majority of the read but i feel like it completely fell flat at the end. i hated that things were still resolving themselves on the final page - i wish we got even 50 more pages for hugh and minerva to actually explore their romantic dynamic and enjoy the relationship once the miscommunication issues were no longer a factor at play. the ending overall felt pretty rushed and anticlimactic after such a buildup of both plot and relationship tension and left me disappointed.

apart from this, the story flows really nicely and world-building details are woven in effortlessly as well. for the most part, i really liked getting to switch my brain off a little and enjoy a healthy dose of 1800s yearning and humour, and i’d be down to check out the rest of the series.
