This book was good, but sad. I’m not really sure what to think of it. It tells a heartbreaking story of love, loss, and growth in a similar manner of "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" in that the protagonist seems naive but the book deals with very advanced and mature topics. There is a lot to think about, and it really makes you consider family relations, and take a look at sexual abuse, lesbian relationships, drug/alcohol use, suicide among other things. It’s depressing at points, but it definitely has a redemptive message and a theme of growth and overcoming the hardships of life. It also has some amazingly thought provoking quotes about who we are and taking life by the reigns. I would have rated it higher for the intricicity and finesse with which it handles hard ideas, but I also found it boring at points and not extremely relatable. Plus I don’t like emotions/romances and this book was definitely an emotional romance.

This book was a tough ride.

The writing style was really painful for me (because it was so slow and the letters didn’t really help me feel immersed) but at the same time Laurel‘s story was quite beautiful.

If it weren’t for the slowness of the book and how I really didn’t get to connect with anyone in this book, I may have given it more stars, but 2 feel right to me right now.

This book felt quite therapeutic though, even if it’s just in the knowledge of that I‘m happy I‘m not as depressed and traumatized as Laurel.
