Ilkwon Ha crafts a magical and moving tale through Annarasumara. This webtoon's unique narrative styles created an elating reading experience from start to finish. My jaw dropped so many times while I was reading it. How could I not with a webtoon as gorgeous as this? It may have been released during the early 2010s but even up until now this webtoon's relevance still lingers. It is replete with introspective dialogue that is bound to enlist the reader with food for thought. Before I end this review I want to ask: Do you believe in magic? If you want to find out, why not read Annarasumara?
this webtoon was so whimsical and just magical in general
it made me believe in magic again just like the mc (this sounds very corny i am sorry) it took a few days for me to actually appreciate it and just realise how much i deviated from my childhood dreams. it was only a couple of years ago i was happy with my many dreams and not fully grasping the concept of growing up, getting a job, doing adult things like idk taxes?? mortgages?? (i still don't know how pls send help) and meeting mine and societies expectations. Though those fears have settled into every vein and vessel of my body accumulated with stress hormones now, this story made me relax a bit and just believe(?). Now that i think abt it, it gave me a lil boost in life.
so yes I BELIEVE IN MAGIC (;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`)

When I saw the Netflix adaptation, I knew I had to read the webtoon FIRST.
AND IT WAS THE BEST DECISION I COULD HAVE EVER MADE.
This story is a masterpiece. The author is a mastermind.
Exploring money, power, status, society, mental health and growing up through artistic metaphors and magic is something I never thought I would see in a webtoon.
It's incredible!!! Spell-binding!!! Magnificent!!!
The symbolism, colour placement, art, storyline, characterization, EVERYTHING IS EXCEPTIONAL BEYOND WORDS!!!
Ha Il-kwon you are a true genius in every sense of the word 😭🙏
The writing of the webtoon is rather simplistic which contrasts spectacularly with the intricate planning of the art design. (We also have to bear in mind that a lot gets lost in translation, as a few webtoon commenters have already noticed minor word changes between the English text and the original Korean). The overall colour tone is black, white and grey, which could be said to explain the dreary grey of the current confirmative society and/or perceptions of adulthood. It could also be used to convey the depressing, lacklustre life of the protagonist. The artist uses specific colours to highlight and brighten certain parts that could be described as non-confirmative or "childish". The colours also signify important moments or turning points in the lives of the characters.
I couldn't think of a better way to tie everything together than with magic. The magician's character acts as a bridge between childhood / adulthood and "socially acceptable" / "socially unacceptable". Each of the 3 main characters cover a fundamental issue in society, from poverty to academic pressure. Even the names of the characters fit with their role! A clever linguistic ploy on the author's side.
The name Il-deung, given to a wealthy character who is motivated to strive for academic excellence by parental and societal pressures, means "number one".
The name Ah-hee, given to an impoverished character who was forced to grow up too fast and desperately wants to be a "normal" adult, means child (ironically).
This story covers so many really important issues in our society that deserve immediate attention! I truly wish that everyone everywhere could read this webtoon, or at least watch the drama adaptation. Perhaps they won't understand ALL the complex metaphors and analogies, but everyone will be able to grasp, and very likely relate to, the key concepts covered.

I was reading this before the Netflix show aired and between reading/watching it, it was SUCH a good story. The Webtoon artwork was stunning, with the use of limited colors, along with the storyline that talked about magic, the desire to grow up, and making your life your own (without falling under the pressures of society/others). Do YOU believe in magic? ✨
