Hm. Less thrillers with sordid secrets and men being gross, please. The twists were not enough to balance that out. And this time the characters weren't just terrible people, they were also annoying. I wanted to read something very different from the Sanderson tome I just finished, and I did accomplish that, but nah, this vibe is not for me.

If you need likeable characters to get you through a story, this isn't the book for you. With that out of the way, I enjoyed this book, and though the audiobook narration was excellent. I actually guessed two major twists
1) Ben isn't dead and 2) it's actually the dad who got murdered
surprisingly early on
(hint hint if an author doesn't actually show a death and also seems to be vague on names, there's some trickery at play!)
but I actually liked the twists and it was the ending I was hoping for.

My one critique is the setting. We're in Paris, but the story could have been set anywhere, really. This wouldn't be such a problem if it wasn't, you know, part of the title. Earlier this year I re-read The Mask Falling which is also set in Paris (and also, funnily enough, another book published during the pandemic - I'll always remember that because Samantha Shannon made a joke about the title having different connotations during lockdown!). Despite that book being a retro-futuristic, steampunkish dystopian novel set in 2060ish, it explored Paris and its history in a way this book really didn't. I think if I'd taken this book to Paris with me on holiday, hoping to feel extra immersed, I would've been mildly disappointed.

This isn't a fantastic story by any means, but I was engaged throughout, which is what I look for in a mystery novel. Overall - bien!

Enjoyable read! I liked the short chapters even though they were all so anxiety-inducing. I found the FMC to be so annoyingly without self-awareness at certain parts of the book to the point of frustration. Nevertheless, the plot twists made up for it and the story development was very entertaining. Would say this is a very good thriller.
