I was read this by one of my teachers in elementary school. Quality artwork and a meaningful history lesson that is easy to understand for younger readers.

I remember reading this in elementary school when we were first learning about slavery. Excellent historical fiction with a very informative author's note, and at the end, it has the song lyrics and music to learn the song.

A historical fiction book for young readers about the underground railroad. I wondered about the authenticity of the song in the back of the book and found this.

I think it's a decent introduction to young children about some of the difficulties faced by slaves in America, about how they were sold & families were split apart, that slaves were pursued and faced many dangers on their escapes north, and that they would head for Canada to find freedom.

I read this book in second grade. I enjoyed it. And read it many times since. It's a wonderful book for grades two to four to read. And I would highly recommend it.

I read this one in grade school (pretty sure it was on Reading Rainbow at some point lol)! And I was looking for books for my nephew's first birthday, and grabbed it! If your kiddo likes books you can sing along with, this is a great one. The illustrations are bright, and the story is powerful!

Jeanette Winter offers perhaps the finest, simplest example of the Underground Railroad in children's literature. At young ages, kids hear 'railroad' and think of trains; it's difficult for them to grasp the transportation of souls. The story and illustrations here illuminate the experience of slaves seeking flight and freedom during a dark time for our nation.

I remember "Follow the Drinking Gourd" from childhood. It's a classic, in my opinion.

Read this to my 11 year old and 12 year old tonight. When we finished, my daughter took the book and hugged it to her chest as she walked back to her room declaring, "I'm putting this on my shelf." Then I had to break the news that it was a library book.

Excellent nonfiction picture book for older kids. Not that it wouldn't also be great for younger kids, just different depths of understanding of what's happening.

This exquisitely illustrated book tells the story of black people fleeing slavery in the United States and coming to Canada where they would be safe.
