I loved this book. LOVED it. I put off finishing it because it’s so beautiful. This was just a random pick off the library shelf, and I’m so glad I did. The prose is delicate and gentle, the story is fragile and precious, and the structure of the book overall is intricate without being complicated. This was my first tearjerker of the year, but in a quiet, heartfelt kind of way and not a total broken heart thing. I think the only thing that would have made this book better is if I read it in its original Japanese, but alas, I am uncultured and can only read in English.

"It's not true that you can't make someone's life better. You make my life better, for example.

"the heartbeat library " takes you on a journey through time, telling you the story of self discovery, love, growth, life and grief. I enjoyed all the beautiful elements found in this book. From the characters to the landmarks to the words and quotes shared...beautiful.

I will say that this book does jump through various perspectives, spaces in time, and character voices which took a little bit (for me personally) to understand. HOWEVER! I definitely think it's worth it and so fun when you see how all the pieces fit together.

Highly recommend!!!

Another exploration of love and grief, poignant yet understated. Very much a slow-burn read.
Our main character is an illustrator, dealing with the loss of his wife and son. He has returned to his hometown to sort out the affairs and house of his recently deceased mother. During the time he is at the house he befriends a local boy, sharing their stories of the woman they knew.
For a substantial part of the book we are simply watching the unlikely friendship between these two characters unfurl. As we draw near to the end they make a trip to the island of Teshima, where there is a library housing an archive of heartbeats. During this trip our main character makes a discovery that allows him the chance to start moving forwards.
Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the chance to read and review this before publication.
