This was written really beautifully. Sad, but in an uplifting way especially towards the end when the individual stories came together, enjoyed it!

Written with such tenderness and care, we follow Suichi on a journey of self discovery, and his life after a devastating event. He learns about happiness and how to move through a life that was riddled with guilt, loneliness and pain.
Suichi takes a journey to Teshima, to the library of heartbeats, which I was so pleased to know that this is a real place 💕
.
“We all have one in our chest (heartbeat), all of us. But everyone hears it differently” pg 247
.
This is such a calm, heartfelt, emotional read and I utterly adored it. I think I’m both heart-warmed and heartbroken at the same time. I also learnt a lot of facts and research about the heart and heartbeats which were woven in, which makes it extra special.
This is a easy read- large text and spaced out pages, so you can fly through the pages quickly. This is the same author who wrote The Phone Box at the End of the World, which I have heard about but am going to make a priority to read it.

This is a really beautiful book about grief, loss and learning to love again.
Shuichi returns to his home town after his mother's death. He has learnt over the years to protect his heart from pain and not to feel any emotions, and so it comes as a surprise to him when he meets eight-year old Kenta and an unlikely friendship starts to grow.
There is a connection between the man and the boy which is only revealed gradually, but they are bound together by loss and grief and together they learn to move forward.
It's a tricky book to review, as I don't want to give too much away. But it is absolutely beautifully written, almost poetic in places. The characters are vivid and real and your heart aches for many of them at different times in the book.
I have been looking for the quote which, I feel, sums up this book, but I can't find it so I will have to paraphrase. Everything you love will one day end, but if you shut your heart up to pain, you also close yourself off from joy.
It's about the messy business of life, and finding joy and happiness where you can!
