This is a graphic novel for all ages, but I liked reading it with a younger reader in mind. I love Gene Luen Yang--saw him speak and draw at ALA--and I have even more respect for him after this reinvention of the Green Turtle. Little slices like this one show us the complexity of what it means to live in this country, to read, to create, to believe in superheroes.

This book would be a great addition to a unit about Chinese immigration to the US. The fantasy elements add a spiritual dimension and the gender roles, yet another. Lots to discuss, great for middle/high school.

Very fun story and beautiful revival of a forgotten superhero, made all the more interesting by the history and rumors behind the original comic.

Age Recommendation: 10+

Gene Luen Yang resurrects the previously forgotten Golden Age hero The Green Turtle, who was famous for being the first Asian American superhero. Editors of the time never let his face be shown however, so it just had to be implied. Yang takes this character and runs with it, giving him the culture he needed to truly be an inspirational character (some great artwork doesn't hurt either).

Shadow Hero begins with a lesser known comic hero called the Green Turtle and turned into quite an awesome adventure. I loved the story, but it was made even more special after reading the afterword about the inspiration behind the GN. A very well done book, like all of Yang's, that will be loved by teens and adults alike.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel. I have mixed feelings on Gene Luen Yang, I don't always love his stories/plots but I really like that there is an artist out there highlighting Chinese culture. I feel like the strength of this book was increased by the fact it was their interpretation of the Golden Age Green Turtle comic. I thought this was a great way to honor a forgotten comic author and show their love for the history of comics.

The critics don't lie, this is a great book. It gives the back story of the Green Turtle, who was actually a golden age hero who had previously been largely forgotten. The mix of Chinese immigrant experience with fun and funny family relationships make this well worth your time. (A quick read too.)
