2.75 Stars

I was really excited for this 2nd book in this series, considering I quite enjoyed the first book (& yes, I admittedly thought the cover was beautiful, so I did indeed judge the book by the cover, mistakenly)... But, sadly, this one fell short for me.

I did not like the FMC, Ada. She was unpredictable, annoying, & difficult to read. Both of her inner monologue & her actions really disappointed & frustrated me. She's the reason why I'm rating this book 2.75 instead of going any higher. I understand that the author was trying to write her as a complex character (what with her past relationship & the trauma she's been through because of it, & her relationship with her parents making her who she is "today," ultimately deeming herself as "tolerable"), but I fear it fell short. I think Emmy (the FMC from the first book, & now side character in this story) was written much better, & I really missed reading from her perspective in this book, & found myself excited whenever her & Teddy (Emmy's best friend) would show up since I didn't connect with the main character.

I loved Wes, as I thought I would, since I liked his character from the first book. Usually when I read romance books with dual POVs (or any books like this), I heavily dislike reading from the MMC perspective & always wish the book was only written from the FMC's POV... But, with this book, I actually enjoyed Wes's POV way more than Ada's, which is a first for me. I appreciate how the author tried to incorporate Depression representation in this book with Wes. I know it wasn't a complete & fully accurate representation, but it was still nice to read about it, acknowledging that this is a real illness that anyone can suffer from (including myself). I do wish there was more about it though...

All in all, this book was just okay. I think it could've & should've been longer, considering all the "hard" topics that were presented to us-the readers-in this book. I think it would've been more enjoyable & made more sense if it was longer. But, I recommend this book if you've read the first one, & liked Wes's character. Only read it as an "entertainment" book though... Don't expect much.

Side note/Honorable mentions: There was no tonal shift during the sexy times like the first book, so I liked that. We should've been given a better description of what the FMC earlier on in the book, the photo on the cover doesn't count. There is no depth with liking any musical artists-Taylor Swift, country, classic rock-so, it was odd when it was implied that is shapes who you are based on that.

(P.S. I still strongly dislike Gus-the eldest Ryder sibling-& love Teddy... & because of this I'm nervous for the next book in this series coming out in November 2024... It's based on their love story, which is sort of strange & disappointing, considering how much they hate one another. & we hate to see a strong, funny, & witty woman end up with a man like Gus. I just hope Gus proves to us that he deserves Teddy, because she's literally the coolest character in this series.)
