With a premise as absurd as this one, an author really has to nail just about everything else in the book to clear the bar. Amazingly Tana French does it. The impossibility of passing one person off as another among the second's close friends actually begins to fade as the characters take shape. It never gets more believable but it stops mattering because of the skill of the character work. A very good book.

I just cannot make myself believe in the premise.
Not perfect, but a very enjoyable read. I was a little sceptical about the doppelgänger premise, but once I decided to accept this rather supernatural element, I really appreciated the story. Some descriptions were a little long and the pace was sometimes slow, but the dialogues were witty and when the plot picked up again I couldn't put the book down. The crime investigation kept me in suspense just as much as the relationships between the characters. I can't say the big reveal was a shock (although some parts of it were unexpected), but it was still well-written and heartbreaking. When I reached the end, I felt a little pang of emotion and I knew I would miss the characters for a few more days.
Way too long, could easily have been 100 pages shorter. Interesting premise, that’s the only reason I finished it.
