i fear the merit of this book may have been lost in translation

wow wow this was so cool !! i studied ‘troubling love’ briefly in uni and wasn’t really blown away. it didn’t stick with me and whilst i liked ferrante’s writing the story didn’t do it for me at all. ‘days of abandonment’ was a totally different ball game, entirely overwhelming, riveting, consuming: this book swallows you whole. i felt olga’s confusion, rage, desperation, longing and healing right along with her. it’s a testament to ferrante’s ability that i was completely unable to step outside of olga, to see clearly and objectively, like her i wanted mario to come back and rescind his betrayal with all of my heart until she herself learned to move on from him. the complex and nuanced depiction of motherhood was also *chef’s kiss*.

You can never make me form a solid opinion on you Olga sorry that happened to you though.

In all seriousness this felt like a bizarre combination of Chopin's The Awakening and Elena from the Neapolitan Novels, but specifically in The Story of the Lost Child. I liked it.
