she lost her shit after he left fr

Incisive, clever, controlled, unabashed, nastily frank. My first Ferrante and she is obviously an excellent writer. Is there anything more terrifying than living your entire life, sacrificing your body, and bearing children for a man who then makes the supremely familiar yet always astounding choice to leave you for a (much) younger woman? And what do you do, you who must continue to cook, to keep the home, to care for the children who now hate you because you were not good enough to keep their father? Only vertigo remains.

Olga, on the cusp of middle age, is blindsided by her husband’s request for a separation and subsequent relationship with the much younger woman he left her for. The book charts the unravelling of Olga’s sense of self, purpose as the rage and bewilderment of grief overtake her. Meanwhile, she must still care for her children, the ill-fated family dog, the minutia of domestic life.  The narrator lays bare, in propulsive prose, the brutish experiences of motherhood, womanhood and playing in the ruins of midlife in ways that are hard to look away from.
