I had a bit of a hard time reading this book. Halfway through I wanted to give up because it was getting so repetitive and self-destructive. But once I got through that hump, I realized just how necessary it was.
Ferrante does a scary good job of detailing Olga’s manic breakdown in the midst of her two young children. Looking back, I’m equally impressed but repulsed. Such an odd mixture of feelings but no other way to really describe it. I can see why this wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

This book somehow felt like nothing and everything simultaneously, constantly.
Two things:
1) To me, Ferrante displayed how abandonment is almost always contagious. To be abandoned by another almost always means to abandon yourself, those dependent on you, those you love. These were the days of pervasive, contagious, all-encompassing abandonment.
2) Ferrante calls this a divulgence into 'An absence of sense'. Which also happens to be the most relatable and poignant (190-page) description of the dissociation that accompanies loss/grief I have ever read or heard. And to see her process of re-raveling, of teetering on the potential of regression in the early days of healing, to re-discover her senses, herself. It was magical, really.
That being said, I found the book itself to be mundane and hard to get through at points, but I gradually realized that that may very well be the point.

Compelling and devastating storyline found me at my highest boredom. This book makes me read MyBrilliant Friend.
