Revisiting this after so many years, and it holds up impressively well. Feminine rage at its most potent and real.

not too sweet, not too bitter. i liked the openness of the ending, feeding the fire within the reader while not giving a fake sense of hope where there is none. the characters were diverse, powerful and really lovable. the AFAB autistic representation was really good although I wouldn't use the term Asperger's syndrome because of the nazist connotations and the problematic division of the autistic folks by 'high/low-functioning' labels which is harmful and affected the character quite a lot. a bit ironic to use these terms when talking about Erin who experienced pain due to them:/

but still i can call it a quick read perfect for my femininity struggles:)

This book.. was amazing. the writing is beautiful. it's a relatable book (unfortunately) with characters who are so diverse. this book is an inspirational tale of how people can stand up to discrimination and find themselves the way there. i would recommend this book to any person because they WILL find something valuable and a character to whom they relate. as an autistic girl who loves marine life, erin was such a relatable character and the way she was written made me feel heard. amazing read. the only comment i have is that after a few months, the themes are memorable, but the memory of reading it isn't as fond or impactful. if i were to read it again, the rating would surely move up.

The writing style was beautiful and there were many quotes that hit me hard. The author kept the stakes high and the plot was engaging. The 3 central characters were highly developed. I loved their friendship. The character diversity was realistic, with the main girls coming from marginalized groups in society: Grace as a fat girl, Rosina as a Mexican-American lesbian, and Erin as an autistic girl. The characters felt as if they could be real people, and the portrayals of their struggles were also well executed. There were men who changed for the better and sided with the girls in the story, and there were women who were unsure if they would fit in with the Nowhere Girls. I liked how the characters were displayed in a gray area instead of purely morally black or white.
I really disliked Principal Slattery. She became like Umbridge after a while. I also hated Amber for what she did to Otis and how she insulted Erin. That girl seriously needed help.
With all these characters, it was impossible to fully flesh out everyone, so I liked the “us” chapters where I got to see glimpses of even minor characters’ lives. The one major issue I had with the book was the ending.
The girls only succeeded because of the sheriff who had twin daughters. The same institution which made it so that Lucy couldn’t get justice during her time in that town was the same entity that fixed the problem with Cheyenne. Spencer and the other boys are arrested, yet Lucy’s case still needs to be brought to trial.
The resolution came too easily for my taste, but other than that the book was a fantastic read.
