I enjoyed the fifth outing with Carl and company, however felt at times the story could have been carved down. There are occasional moments where the action is slightly improbable and a little too miraculous, however the author is able to keep the reader entertained and doesn't allow these moments to bog down the story.
Usually power plays between a superior and the protagonist bore me to the point of abandoning the entire series - I walked away from Louise Penny's Gamache after The Beautiful Mystery - however Adler-Olsen is able to handle the conflict between Carl and the boss in a way which is simply allows more depth to the Carl character and never becomes the focal point of the story. Plus, it's always fun when Carl loses it and goes a little offside on others. Adler-Olsen also does not make the boss a one-dimensional villain out to destroy Carl and Department Q. He adds a mysterious back story that only adds to the mystery which is Assad while giving us more insight into his character. Rose has grown on me and while there are moments in the book which make me wish her character would be written off, overall I enjoy her character development.

Another book in the Q-series, so another disappointing read? My answer is twofold; I thought this book a pleasent read and I didn't struggle with it as much as with some (most) of the previous books, but it still had the same weaknesses as the previous books. The writing is still not good and the story just isn't as credible as some of the best crime novels out there.
There are multiple reasons why I didn't struggle as much as I usually do with the Q-series. Firstly I can say that the characters are always nice to go back to and that was also this time around. Further I have been reading one single serie the last couple of months (Malazan) and I was in need of something completely different. I think it made me a bit more 'open' to read this book. Further it has also been some time when I read the previous book so my tolerance level was probably higher than last time. Lastly, for me the story was just better than in some of the previous installments; I liked that it involved some financial fraud and a criminal network. And also Marco was a nice addition.
That's not to say that it didn't have certain weaknesses. Besides the ones I already mentioned (writing and credibility), this book was a bit repetitive at some points. Marco is continuously on the run and seems to escape one critical situation after the other. It delivered some tension, but the story could also have used a bit more variation.
Conclusion:
A decent book, better than I expected but still no masterpiece. I'm no longer expecting that from Jussi Adler-Olsen.

I loved all the other department Q novels, this one took too long to develop and way to many characters. Hopefully if there is another I will enhoy more.

Het verhaal gaat heel erg van de hak op de tak en er valt niet makkelijk doorheen te komen. Het eerste boek uit de Afdeling Q serie vond ik erg goed, maar daarna werd het steeds minder. Nu toch maar besloten om te stoppen met deze serie. Je interesse veranderd soms 🤷🏼‍♀️
Considerably less downbeat than earlier Department Q novels. Gypsy boy Marco is caught between the police and the financial criminals and his lowlife thieving clan, all three of which are trying to kill/catch him. Marco is central, in an exciting prolonged chase. Which takes pages away from our usual heros, Carl, Rose, and Assad, the reason I read this series. Hopefully not a trend.
Der fünfte Fall für das Sonderdezernat Q in Kopenhagen war von allen bisherigen mein liebster. Nur zu gerne liess ich mich ein weiteres Mal in die dänische Hauptstadt entführen, um mich dort zusammen mit Marco durch die Gassen zu schlagen. Heisst für mich - Heimweh pur.
Nordische Krimiautoren haben oftmals ein Gespür dafür, wie sie soziale Brennpunkte in ihre literarischen Werke einfliessen lassen können (z.B. Henning Mankell). Auch Adler-Olsen kommt immer wieder auf komplexe Themen zu sprechen (und auf Kamele, vergesst die Kamele nicht!).
Im Mittelpunkt von „Erwartung“ steht der junge Marco, ein Illegaler und noch dazu ausgebildet, den reichen Dänen das Geld im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes aus der Tasche zu ziehen. Doch Marco hat genug und möchte ein ganz normales Leben führen. Leider macht seine Gang ihm das nicht so einfach. Ausserdem haben noch ein paar gierige Banker ihre Finger im Spiel.
Das Buch lebt vor allem durch Marco, ein äusserst kluger Junge, der bloss am falschen Ort geboren wurde. Normalerweise verbringe ich die Lesezeit am liebsten mit Carl und Assad im Sonderdezernat, aber in diesem Buch genoss ich die Zeit mit Marco am meisten. Ich bewundere sein Vermögen, sich auch in widrigsten Umständen zurechtzufinden und auch in schwierigsten Situationen das Richtige zu tun.
Wie gewohnt erzählt Adler-Olsen flüssig und spannend. Bei mir flogen die Seiten nur so dahin. Nachdem ich "Selfies" eher zäh und uninteressant fand, genoss ich dieses Buch somit umso mehr. Es ist eines jener Titel, in die ich voll und ganz eintauchen konnte, die Umgebung ausblenden und einfach nur mitten in der Geschichte sein.
Nur mit Rose hatte ich auch hier meine Mühe. Sie ist mir zu zänkisch und irgendwie immer schlecht gelaunt. Natürlich hat das seine Gründe, aber deswegen finde ich sie trotzdem anstrengend. Nach dem aktuellsten Adler-Olsen-Titel bin ich gespannt, wie sie sich entwickeln wird. Hier konnte sie mich leider nicht überzeugen, auch wenn sie zugegebenermassen einen guten Job macht.
Aktuell fehlen mir noch zwei Titel der Reihe, auf die ich mich baldmöglichst stürzen werde.

Meiner Meinung nach nicht so gut wie die vorausgegangenen Bücher. Bei mir ist nicht das Gefühl aufgekommen, dass ich das Buch nicht aus der Hand legen kann so wie bei den Vorgängern. Insgesamt alles etwas ruhiger als in den vorhergehenden Büchern. Die Thematik ist jedoch gut gewählt und man gewinnt kleine Einblicke in relativ aktuelle Probleme Dänemarks.
Ein weiterer Kritikpunkt ist, dass die Charakterentwicklung der bisher bekannten Charaktere relativ flach bleibt. Interessant ist aber, dass ein Neuzugang zum Sonderdezernat kommt und ich bin gespannt wie sich das in den nächsten Büchern entwickelt.
