Does anyone else think that the description of the Welsh aristocracy (Fitzherbert) has been the inspiration of "Downton Abbey?" I mean, the impregnated servant is named "Ethel", the butler uses the phrase "none of your cheek" etc.
I listened to this for the second time this fall to refresh my memory of the characters and story lines before starting the Winter of the World. I enjoyed it even more this second read. I found I had forgotten much less that I thought I would have. I think the first time through I absorbed less of the political issues and so got a better understanding of that this time.
I was a little annoyed by some of the sex scenes and tended to skim past those. I just don't find them to add to my enjoyment of the story and actually are more of a distraction.

Really amazing story. I went out and got the second one right away.
While none of the characters felt like real live people, Follett created a world that felt lived in. Thrilling historical exposition gifts the reader with a sense of having been there.

I loved the characters but definitely got lost in a lot of the politics.
It's a good reminder that humane suffrage is mostly caused by people's pride, greed and ignorance.
The book was long but was smoothly written it did not matter. So many plots were very predictable other were not so much. I think the book lingered between a zone of not being one hundred percent historical narrative and being a story about not very deep fictional characters that are affected by WWI or how they participated in the political changes in their countries.
The way I felt about most characters was neutral, other with a little bit of dislike. I didn't relate to any of them, I didn't root for any of them. I don't feel like I want to immediately grab the second book to know what happened to them.
The ending annoyed me because it was conveniently written. I think it needed a little bit of a shock value.
