Really enjoyed this book notwithstanding that ‘world war’ fiction is usually something I would avoid. The real talent of this book is navigating big events from the archduke assassin through to the treaty of Versailles whilst focusing on characters individual arcs. Each character had their own distinctive story and the only criticism I can give is how often these characters would pass over each other (which is fairly unrealistic) but as a plot point, it didn’t bother me too much. Overall - I would recommend this book and I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series!

Good historical fiction. A bit trite in the connections of all the characters but I guess necessary to a degree. Kind of like The Nightingale. Everything works out to a neat little bow…
I learnt so much while reading this book. The characters are rich and you become attached to them. Great read.
We tend to forget our past and the many victories and losses that have come and gone. This book made me remember that and more. It was a fantastic read. You come to love some characters and hate others. It brings the past to life in a different way. What an amazing writer to have a made a glorious story, set in one of humanitys worst wars and the beginning of an even more horrific one.

Another amazing Follett epic, though the intricate detail on WWI strategy did get tedious. Can't wait for the next one.
