Excellent start to a new series. As always Follett writes enjoyable characters, and a strong story. I'm not especially well versed in WW I, but I had no problem following the story & how the politics of the time were shaping the war.
I'm a little sad that I have to wait for book two. However, he wrapped up everyone's story well enough that it can be a stand alone book.

The first book in my favorite series! The series follows multiple characters across Europe in the 1910s-1930's whose stories all eventually come together. This first book takes you through WWI, the labor movement, the women's suffrage movement, the Russian Revolution, and other major historical events. Characters are sometimes plopped in sort of Forrest Gump style, other times they play a significant role in the action. Fall of Giants is my least favorite in the series because the next two are just more interesting time periods to me (2nd book follows WWII, 3rd follows the 1960's - Rock and Roll, Cold War, and Civil Rights era).
The best part about this series is that each subsequent book follows the children of the characters from the story before. So you have an in-depth look at the origins of characters in the two later books which helps you connect in your mind how history affects the present/future.

My first Ken Follett novel. Well researched, great characters.
I loved this book and immediately started into the 2nd one of the trilogy. This book is a fun history lesson for those of us who were daydreaming during history class. Everything I know I learned from historical fiction. This book introduces the reader to twenty or more characters from different countries, ages and classes in the lead up to and during WWI. The author brilliantly weaves these stories in an out of each other. Some of the characters are dear and others are wretched but even some others are bad and good at the same time.
