This was a long book, but really interesting. I didn't know much about World War I going into it, but really feel I have a much better idea of what happened now. I love historical fiction and this book definitely brought me into the lives of the people involved. It was neat how the author connected them all in some way. It definitely added the element of compassion into the war scenes. The only complaint I personally have is there was a ton of war strategy discussed (and I skimmed those parts), but I can imagine that others might enjoy those parts. It's just not my thing. I enjoyed the human aspect and the characters' stories more. It must have been pretty engaging to hold me for 985 pages!

A very good history lesson with a bit of sexy time. I enjoyed to learn the history but put in context with what people though and felt and how they lived during that time. I think it is a must read. I expected it to be like the Kingsbridge series (Pillars of the Earth and the rest of the series) where the characters are going through horrible things just to finally be happy when they are so old that they are probably going to die in 3 years. I think the book focuses more on the history and not so much on the drama. I liked it, I couldn't read one more Pillars of the Earth.

Terrible! Formulaic and is basically just a cheesey romance. Could not finish this if I tried. I was looking forward to reading Pillars of the Earth but now I'm not so sure..
