Really liked it at parts and with certain characters. Suffered a bit from being overlong and for having what I like to call "Forrest Gump Syndrome": every character just happened to be involved with all the most crucial events in the WWI era, just like Forrest in all the historical shots they photoshopped him into in the film. Even the poor and otherwise completely unimportant of Follett's narrative end up integral to shaping history. Moreover, every single fictional character was intertwined with others (across entire continents and circumstances) by a strange set of coincidences. It got very, very convoluted at points. It was as if these 7 (or so) main characters were the drivers of the world, and the rest of humanity was just spinning in their orbit.
All that being said, I still enjoyed it. While I did not rush to listen to it like I do with some other books, once it was on, I was fairly engrossed. I'm not sure I'll pick up the other books in this trilogy.

Wow, wow, wow! Of all the books I've read so far, this one seems like it would have been the most difficult to write. Follett incorporates a broad understanding of the world during WWI and Russian Revolution. In addition to global politics, Follett details the lifestyles of British, German, Russian, and American aristocrats and working class. The book is balanced between the thoroughly researched motivations behind the wars and the personal lives of fictional characters used to tell the story. Important historical figures are also nicely integrated.
My personal interest leaned toward the stories of the characters, but the in-depth history of the wars was also impressive.

It was refreshing to read about World War I, as so many family sagas focus on the Second World War. I particularly enjoyed the perspectives of German and Russian characters, as the Bolshevik Revolution takes place and the first stirrings of Nazism are felt. It helped highlight how the first war set the stage for the next. Looking forward to the next books!
