Perfectly gorgeous!

I’m going to try this book again one day. The writing is extremely flowery and it take 3 pages for him to go from his bed to store, with nothing important happening in between. The tense is also very odd.

Heartbreaking!
The narrative was at times confusing with its shifts and turns, in characters and times, throughout the telling of stories that weren’t stories, but memories, some fantastical some more candid. Still, it’s beautiful and lyrical, sad and moving. It’s a book about the love for a country you’ve lost to war before you lost in distance, a story of love that transcends pain and trauma, that unites and saves.

An intimate and moving tale of grief and exile, of violence and resistance, of hope in the face of loss. Cinematic and rich in its depiction of conflict, both physical and internal, at times almost too ambitious in scope. A great read! 👍🏻

Overall, this was an impressive debut that really tugged at my heartstrings. I think this book was very ambitious, trying to combine lived experiences of many queer people from Syria, showing life there and in many other neighbouring countries, generational trauma, refugee experiences and a wonderful love story ending in late life. Unfortunately, I often felt like I was given snippets of things I would love to explore further but we never returned to these characters/elements. Most of the time the book felt very disjointed with the constant jumping around. While I absolutely loved aspects of this, I never quite found my footing with this story. Still, I am impressed by how much the author made me feel for the two main characters and their love - considering the very limited time we spend actually developing that relationship. I'll definitely check out more work by the author.
