Fluffy but spicy, like the perfect gingerbread cookie. A fun addition to the series, the narrator manages to make every scene feel like stunning and warm.

I have had Lisa Kleypas on my author radar since I read a book of herâs for review last year. I became obsessed. I scour used bookstores for her work. I carry a list of her books that I own in my wallet so I donât double buy her books. I have always had a soft spot for historical fiction. Her books combine historical fiction with romance and it is sublime. Needless to say, when a request came across my email to review her newest book âThe Ravenelâsâ I pounced on it.
Phoebe has been navigating the waters of being a widow since her beloved husband, Henry, died two years prior. She has kept busy raising her two boys. When she is forced to attend her brotherâs wedding to a cousin of West Ravenel she is dismayed. She has loathed him her whole life even though she has never met him in person. She knows all she needs to know about him from the letters Henry wrote her while he was in boarding school with him. He bullied Henry beyond belief. While it was never physical bullying, it was verbal abuse and stealing one of his prized possessions. However, when she arrives at the Estate, she sees a handsome man with a captivating gaze. They have an easy conversation. All of that ends when he is introduced as West Ravenel. She instantly becomes cool towards him. Later that night she is seated next to him for dinner. They have a lively conversation and she begins to realize that he isnât as bad as the letters she received portrayed. Things slowly blossom between them. Will he get over him not being good enough for her to allow himself to fall in love? Will she be able to move on from her beloved Henry and open herself up to love once more?
First off, this is the 5th book in her Ravenelâs series. However, you can read them as a stand alone. It does help to read the other books as most of the secondary characters and the main characters in some cases have appeared in her other books. It sometimes helps with the characterâs backstory. I absolutely devoured this book. The story was sweet. It has a young widow who is still not quite recovered from the death of her husband and a man who is well known for his debauchery and womanizing. The story that the author weaves bringing them together is wonderful. We see West slowly becoming the man that he wants to be but really doesnât know how. He finds his calm in life in the form of Phoebe. Phoebe finds a man that helps her move on from her husbandâs death and discover herself once more.

Hmmm. Turns out I like my Lisa Kleypas heroines best when they are widows, and not starry-eyed inexperienced innocents...
