i went into this book not believing i would like it. i know what i enjoy and i stick with it religiously. reading this felt like learning to love reading all over again. learning to love my home, my family, my lungs. Elizabeth Acevedo has a gorgeous way with words and i will be reading her other works.

This book was a beautifully heartbreaking look at grief and dealing with the outing of long-kept family secrets. Camino and Yahaira were both such real and well-developed characters and I felt so deeply for them both. My only issue with this book was that I struggled a bit with the writing - I'm not used to reading in verse and this may have been smoother on audio.

This novel is a tender exploration of grief and family, and it approaches the topic with so much heart. I especially loved that it's in verse and how it uses that to show emotion.
The ending also felt fitting and well-foreshadowed.
I would absolutely reccomend to anyone looking for a heartfelt story.

A beautifully written and unique tale of the intricacies of sisterhood. Told in verse, it’s poetic nature is profound and deeply moving. A rarity that I enjoyed from start to finish! and I can’t recommend it enough.

While predictable in some ways, this novel in verse tells the story of an imperfect man full of love for the women in his life, regardless how complex his love makes his life. The story is beautiful, the characters are strong and formidable, and the ending is exactly how it should be.
