After listening to the audiobook of The Poet X earlier this year, I knew that I needed to pick Clap When You Land up via audiobook.
A novel in verse, we're following two teenage girls, Camino and Yahaira, in the aftermath of the death of their father in a plane crash. Separated by more than distance, Camino and Yahaira live separate lives and have to learn to navigate the loss. When it feels like they've lost everything, the two girls learn of each other.
This book is stellar! Making our way through the novel, we're following duel POV's from Camino and Yahaira until they start to intersect. We see how they handle the loss of their father and navigate the world around them. These characters felt so real and raw and beautiful. They're incredibly flawed individuals, which is what makes them relatable to so many.
Acevedo is a genius and delivers the perfect amount of plot and emotion. She infuses the cultural differences between life in NYC and life in the Dominican Republic. It's a stunning book, and words written here will never fully do this book justice.
Trigger warnings: loss of parent; child birth; attempted rape; stalking; sexual harassment.

Would also add "stalking" to the trigger list for this novel in verse.gbaty's review against another edition

I have had a 'rule' for years, that I don't like poetry. This book shatters that assumption. So does most of Elizabeth Acevedo's work, though this is the first one I have read, not listened to as an audiobook.
Also- the imagery of the DR is beautiful and makes me so hungry.

Camino and Yahaira are sisters that have never met. When their Dad dies in a plane crash, they are forced to confront the secrets he kept, including each other.
I have never read a book written in verse before but this certainly won't be my last. I loved how the narrative felt more like a stream of consciousness, placing us inside the minds of the two main protagonists. Acevedo has a way with words, that she can write so little and say so much. Not a word was wasted in the entire book.
I loved how different the lives of the sisters were. Camino was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. She helps aid the sick that cannot afford the care and loves swimming in the ocean. Yahaira lives in New York City with her mother and has a girlfriend, called Dre, who grows plants on their fire escape. It's safe to say I loved Dre. She was the best.
I highly recommend this one if you're thinking of picking up some Young Adult Fiction and fancy a change of pace and structure. I'm excited to read more Acevedo in the future and have my eyes on The Poet X next!๐งก
